ALL RNZE

Functions

1.   The RNZE National Reunion is run every three years by The Sappers Association [NZ] Inc for all serving RNZE or ex-RNZE regardless of whether they are members of the Association or not. The last National Reunion was 14-16 Oct 2022 in the Manawatu. Enquires can be made to the past office holders shown in the Reunion pages on this site. There is an indication that the next National Reunion may be held in the Manawatu in late 2027 [see Reunion pages for updates].

2.   Auckland Sappers Day is normally the closest Sunday to 15 October each year. The usual format is an early morning medals/tie/jacket church parade at St David's Church [1927 foundation stone dedicated as the 'Soldier's Church'] 70 Khyber Pass Road, Grafton, Auckland. Check this site for a Sappers Day Event closer to the date.

Website Finance & Facebook

3.   The NZ$680 per annum for this Tidy HQ secure interactive website is paid for by The Sappers Association [NZ] Inc from interest earned from the [one off] Life Membership fee of $60 @ 5.1% = $3.06 interest per annum towards this website. The Eight Pounds the original ex-WWII Sappers paid in 1961 for their Membership for life is still there, earning interest [well, apart from the $55,000 lost on dud investments circa 2012 and a $10,000 donation for the Corps History Book 2018, the remaining $59,000 is still there, most of it earning interest]. Those wanting to look at these finances can do so at www.societies.govt.nz Society #223501 NZBN 9429042890782 [no account login needed]. Until about 2010 the Association put out a newsletter by 'snail mail' three times a year [stamp $1.20 x 3 = $3.60pa + printing & envelopes]. Thankfully nowadays we have websites, email, facebook, twitter etc and the Association's remaining capital can still get the information out. But it still costs.

4.   Tidy HQ is used for organising Events such as Local Gatherings and Decade Do social functions. The Decade Do's home in on the decade the Member joined the RNZE to organise a social function every few years. The idea is that members can travel long distances to a social function on the sound understanding that they will know most of the people there. So far a few Decade Do's have been held at the Taupo RSA. On the other hand Local Gatherings have a much shorter travel distance, but with membership spanning over 70 years of enlistments, could result in knowing fewer people there. The Association has EFTPOS cards to pay for finger food at social functions. Members can subscribe $5 per annum to prepay for food. Non-members it is $10 cash at the door for food [receipt issued]. Left over funds would be ringfenced as owned by that Era and displayed in the Era Decade Branch Financial Position statement year in and year out until their next Decade Do uses them. Future Decade Do social functions would be held at Picton RSA, Porirua RSA or Turangi RSA. A Decade 2015-24 Do is being considered for 2024.

5.   Facebook for Decade Do's are a series: Sapper NZ 1960-64 Era at five year intervals to Sapper NZ 2010-14 Era. These are by invitation to Members.

6.   For those Sappers who don't want to join the Sappers Association [NZ] Inc [or can't afford to], the sprnthwelfare@gmail.com email is maintained to forward social events to them.

7.   Facebook for all Sappers [members of Sappers Association or non-members] are Sappers of New Zealand and Sapper Mates.

Decade Do Functions

8.   Decade Do social functions are organised from data in member's profiles who have checked their five year Joined RNZE Era. Whilst the named Decade Do spans 10 years, past functions have also invited the five year Era before and after, to make a span of 20 years. The table below shows the general outline of Decade Do's:

An Era Moderator [EM] is needed for each Era to organise a Decade Do. The EM changes to a new person at each Decade Do function held. There's not much to organise: the social function is just a few hours one evening, the members contact database is held on sprnz.tidyhq.com [with links to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin & Instagram], order some finger food etc. Note that there are no Decade Do's for 10 months before a National Reunion. This is to encourage sappers to attend the three day reunion which needs minimum numbers to be financially viable. So, there is a deliberate lack of choice in that year.

9.   The 'Sappers Helping Sappers' philosohpy encourages those that have left the army to help in a 'Hire a Hubby [without the $ hire, being for free]' type effort for families of serving sappers overseas who are members of the Sappers Association.
