FLASH!!! Restoring a Name to the Earth: A Sapper’s Final Salute
Glen Eden RSA
11:00 AM – 12:01 PM
For years, the story of Sergeant Herbert Milne Williamson (4/216) ended in silence. With no headstone and no marked grave. His ashes were scattered by unknown hands, leaving no physical trace of his service or his life. This Sunday, we change that. "Once a Sapper, always a Sapper." We are finally bringing Sgt Williamson back into the fold of the Corps. After extensive research and cross-Tasman collaboration, a formal commemorative plaque has been installed to ensure his name is anchored forever at Waikumete. Join the Glen Eden RSA and the RNZE as we dedicate this memorial and ensure this "lost" soldier is never forgotten again. Family, friends, members of the Corps of Royal New Zealand Engineers (RNZE), and all service persons are cordially invited to attend a formal plaque dedication and commemoration in honour of Sergeant Herbert Milne Williamson. Ceremony Details Commemoration Service Announcement: Sergeant Herbert Milne Williamson Date: Sunday, 24 May 2026 Time: 11:00 am Rendezvous: Glen Eden RSA, 9 Glendale Road, Glen Eden (Opposite Glen Eden Library). (Tony) Hill, National President of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association (RNZSA), will be in attendance. 1 attended [name is found login > Menu > Era Decade Sappers > Army Leave Centres > paragraph 37(c)]. https://sprnz.tidyhq.com/public/pages/army-leave-centres  This reconnaissance of Wellington is primarily aimed at holding a Decade 1990-99 Do and later a Decade 2000-09 Do social function at the Porirua RSA in a years time. It involves finding out about the set up of the Wellington Army Leave Centre about 20 km from Porirua. Those members who may wish to start thinking about a one evening Decade Do social function at Porirua RSA for their own era of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s & 2020s may want to come along for a night [bring your own sheets & pillow case if staying only one night]. Background reading is found on login > Menu > Sappers > New Accounts > paragraph 64 'Sappers Helping Sappers'. About eight years ago we held a couple of Decade Do's at the old Taupo RSA and found that over a dozen people in each case were willing to travel long distances to have a few drinks with their old mates. See Menu > Sappers > All RNZE > paragraph 8 for this. https://sprnz.tidyhq.com/public/pages/all-rnze  Intend catching a local train from Wellington at 1900hrs to Porirua & RSA both evenings. This requires a Snapper Card [see Menu > Sappers > Join > paragraph 45(c)(d)] or Gold Card. https://sprnz.tidyhq.com/public/pages/join-association  Money paid for tickets below will be ring fenced inside the five-year Era of the member purchasing the ticket for off setting future costs of that Era. Enquires to Vail Hubner clk.ed@sprnz.tidymail.co phone: +64274978651.
