2 attended [names are found login > Menu > Era Decade Sappers > Army Leave Centres > paragraph 25]. This reconnaissance of Wellington is primarily aimed at holding a Decade 1960-69 Do and later a Decade 1980-89 Do social function at the Porirua RSA in a couple of months time. It involves finding out about the set up of the Wellington Army Leave Centre about 20 km from Porirua. Those members who may wish to start thinking about a one evening Decade Do social function at Porirua RSA for their own era of the 1950s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s & 2010s may want to come along for the night. Background reading is found on login > Menu > Sappers > New Accounts > paragraph 64 'Sappers Helping Sappers'. About eight years ago we held a couple of Decade Do's at the old Taupo RSA and found that over a dozen people in each case were willing to travel long distances to have a few drinks with their old mates. See Menu > Sappers > All RNZE > paragraph 8 for this. Intend catching a local train from Wellington at 1900hrs to Porirua & RSA. This requires a Snapper Card [see Menu > Sappers > Join > paragraph 45(c)(d)] or Gold Card.

1 attending as at 31Dec [names are found login > Menu > Era Decade Sappers > Venues Decade Do's > paragraph 17]. This reconnaissance of Taupo is primarily aimed at holding a Decade 1965-74 Do social function at the Taupo RSA in a couple of months time. It involves finding out about the set up of the Acacia Bay Army Leave Centre about 7km from Taupo. Also shaking down a new Uber account set by the Sappers Association to avoid drunk driving after the social function. Perhaps order Uber eats as well [the Taupo RSA does not have a restaurant]. Those members who may wish to start thinking about a one evening Decade Do social function at Taupo RSA for their own era of the 1950s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s & 2010s may want to come along for the night. See Menu > Sappers > All RNZE > paragraph 8 for this. Intend catching a local bus from Acacia Bay at 1630hrs to Taupo. This requires a Bee Card [see Menu > Sappers > Join > paragraph 45(a)(d)]. Later we might recon the Army Leave Centres at Waikanae and Wellington Central for Decade Do's at Porirua RSA. There's no Army Leave Centre near Picton RSA, so not sure what to do about overnight accommodation there.

Armistice Day Waihi
Gilmour Lake Reserve
10:45 AM – 12:15 PM
Armistice Day Waihi is celebrated at the Tunnellers Memorial, Gilmour Reserve, Waihi. Bring a picnic to enjoy afterwards. Catch up with others who wish to remember. Enquiries: Vick Beveredge, nztunnellingcompany@gmail.com, Mobile ‭027 372 9189‬ Previous events: Armistice Day 2023 in Waihi In 2023, Pete and Vicki Beveridge welcomed 21 descendants of tunnellers to the commemoration. “Armistice day in New Zealand is not as well attended as it is in Europe,” Waihī Heritage Vision spokesperson Krishna Buckman said. “However, in Waihī at our Tunnellers Memorial in Gilmour Park, we have been commemorating Armistice Day since the dedication of the memorial in 2016.” People made the effort to attend, coming from Taranaki, Auckland and even Gore, she said. The laying of the wreaths was presented by four descendants from the Cook Islands Maumahara Māori Pioneer Battalion, The Forgotten 43, who also shared a recital of The Ode in their Cook Island language. Joh, Moe, Tia and Ben of the Cook Islands also shared stories of their family members who served with the Māori Battalion. “We also welcomed representatives from the Sappers Association, including President Owen Smith and Peter Mellalieu (Auckland), to our ceremony,” Krishna said. “We heard stories from Ernie MacManus, from Otago, son of John (Jack) MacManus, who told us of his father’s experiences in the tunnels, along with letters read by niece Diane Cooper.” Krishna said Taranaki woman Barbara Dargan was gathering stories of her grandfather’s experiences as a tunneller for a book she was writing. “All the descendants’ stories were similar in that the father or grandfather who returned home didn’t talk about their experience in the war, instead choosing to bury their experiences,” Krishna said. “Some also spoke of mental and physical repercussions.” News source: Davidda Hikatangata, 'Waihi Pauses to Remember', The Valley Profile, November 22, 2023 https://www.valleyprofile.co.nz/2023/11/22/waihi-pauses-to-remember/
